Meditation has become popular and is widely credited with many benefits. It reduces stress, improves concentration, and helps one succeed in life. It teaches us how to relax and let go, allowing us to slow down and “smell the flowers.” It even lowers blood pressure and improves the immune response.

These claims are true, but they are only positive side effects. The true purpose of meditation is spiritual awakening, which leads to wisdom and compassion. Long before full awakening, we begin to feel a new inner freedom, lifting us above the waves of ordinary life and anchoring us in stability.

A sense of timelessness grows, and we begin to feel a kind of immortality—even though the body will die. Those who come for the side benefits are welcome, but our aim is the Real.
